The Protagonists Pub

Where Characters Gather

Just Don’t Fall by Emma St. Clair is the first novel released in the Sweater Weather series, where each of the seven novels is written by a different author and released ever Thursday beginning on 31 August 2023. I read this with my Kindle Unlimited subscription. This is a sweet romantic sports comedy and a closed-door romance.

What happens when a NHL star is sent down to the minors to rehab an injury and discovers that his new team and contract require him to perform videos for social media? Hilarity ensues, well for the younger crowd of readers I am assuming.

I normally thoroughly enjoy Emma St. Clair’s book and on more than one occasion I have laughed so hard, I cried. This book however, the humor failed me. It was a little too young and a little too reliant on social media trends. For me personally, they added nothing to the story and I skipped over them whenever they appeared. I just have zero interest in what is trending on TikTok.

The romance was sweet. The main characters knew one another growing up and reconnected in their late twenties, early thirties. I found the romance sweet and not at all insta-love. I want to learn more about the side characters, and I am hopeful that Emma will give them their own books in the coming years. The tropes of fake dating and never been kissed were handled very well and not at all cringe, which is remarkable given how much cringe potential exists with the never been kissed trope.

I enjoyed this book, just not as much as her other books. The pub would be a loud and boisterous place should the town residents of Harvest Hollow ever happen to stop on in.
