The Protagonists Pub

Where Characters Gather

How to Kiss a Movie Star by Jenny Proctor is the fourth and final novel in the How to Kiss a Hawthorne Brother series. It is a clean, romantic comedy and I read it on Kindle Unlimited.

Flint, the youngest and most famous Hawthorne brother, has returned home to North Carolina. He builds a secluded home on property purchased from the local university in an attempt to regain some privacy and a return to “normalcy”. Audrey is a nerdy biologist who refuses to abandon her experiments that were ongoing on the land Flint purchased. In her pursuit of the white squirrel, she inadvertently gets caught by Flint’s security team and thus begins the love story of Flint and Audrey.

This was my least favorite book in the series, but that isn’t an indictment of the book. I don’t enjoy Hollywood romance books, and this is definitely a book that leans heavily into that trope. There was less of the charm of the extended family in this book as well, which was disappointing. The fake dating wasn’t plausible in my opinion, and I never bought into the chemistry between Audrey and Flint.

The book felt forced and awkward for me. Fake dating trope just didn’t work. The shallow relationship, the obviously devious publicist, and the trip to Hollywood were just not my cup of tea. I admittedly had a bias going into the book since I don’t enjoy the Hollywood, movie star trope at all. I had hoped there would have been much more family interaction and time spent in North Carolina.

Overall, the series is fantastic and I look forward to the forthcoming books centered around Audrey’s sisters. The whole Hawthorne family is welcome into the pub anytime they wish.
