Where Characters Gather

The Innocent by David Baldacci was an Audible listen for me from one of my go to authors.  Those two Audible credits a month mean I’m careful about which books and authors I spend credits on.

The always reliable choice of Baldacci was a thorough disappointment this time around.  I listened for a good eight hours but I just could not get into the story.  In every good audio book the narration and narrator make or break the book.  In this case I believe the book suffered from a multitude of problems.  First, the book was boring and disjointed.  Couldn’t figure out who the bloody protagonist was in over five hours of listening.  Second, I could have cared less about any of the characters in the book.  Those two problems are the fault of the author, the next two are problems with narration.  The duel narrators while interesting couldn’t save the story telling when the male narrator is very dry and monotone.  The second main problem with the narration was the two narrators, it is an interesting concept but for me ultimately it detracted from a story that already failed to draw me in and engage me.

Two stars out of five possible based on the previous works of the author, otherwise the book would have gotten one star.  I may at some point in the future give the book another try but for now I’ve moved on to other audio books while walking.
