The Protagonists Pub

Where Characters Gather

Are you a lover of animals?  Do you enjoy well crafted and well written mystery novels?  If so, then you are in for a treat with the fourth installment of the A Gunn Zoo Mystery series by Betty Webb, The Puffin of Death

Personally, I’d never heard of the series or the author prior to stumbling across the book at NetGalley and requesting a preview copy to read.  I was blessed when the publisher approved my request.

This installment takes places in Iceland where the series heroine, Theodora (Teddy) Bentley, is sent to learn about and transport home the newest inhabitants (an orphaned polar bear cub, a mated pair of breeding puffins both unable to return to the wild, and a pair of Icelandic foxes) of the Gunn Zoo in northern California.  While out sightseeing with her host and fellow zoologist, our intrepid protagonist stumbles across a dead body while taking pictures of Puffin nests.

The novel definitely falls in the cozy category and features an interesting cast of characters.  I learned a lot of things about Iceland I didn’t know before I picked up the book.  I’m always pleased when I come away from reading a book a little smarter than before.  I was entertained the whole novel, found the characters relatable and believable.  Admittedly, there were a couple of pop culture references throughout the book (one or two of them I didn’t get) but they were scattered and the exception rather than the rule.

This book is easily five out of five stars.  I will go back and read the first three installments and keep my eye out for future installments.  The book publishes on 3 November 2015 from Poisoned Pen Press.

Edit: I did receive an Advanced Readers Copy in exchange for my fair and honest review.
